Building Trade Talent, One Story at a Time

About the Series

The Challenge: A Growing Skills Gap

The Challenge: A Growing Skills Gap

The Challenge: A Growing Skills Gap

  • The profession of an electrician serves as a prime example of the supply-demand gap within the trades industry.
  • Despite the essential role electricians play in society, there is a shortage of skilled professionals entering the field to meet the growing demand.
  • Factors contributing to this gap include an aging workforce, retiring baby boomers, expanding AI data centers, and a lack of interest among younger generations in pursuing careers in the trades.

The Opportunity: Trade Resources

The Challenge: A Growing Skills Gap

The Challenge: A Growing Skills Gap

  • There is a scarcity of young children's books available that focus on the skilled trades.
  • These resources need to highlight the advantages of pursuing a career in the skilled trades, including that they are empowering professions, fostering independence and job resilience.

The Mission: Reach Kids Earlier

The Challenge: A Growing Skills Gap

The Mission: Reach Kids Earlier

Why Trades Books Matter in Early Childhood (Ages 2–6)

  • Career ideas form early: Research shows children begin forming ideas about jobs and their value in society as young as age three.
  • Early exposure broadens possibilities: Children exposed to career-related books and play materials develop more varied career interests by elementary school.
  • A critical imagination window: Between ages 2 and 6, children freely imagine who they can become, without limits tied to education, income, or stereotypes.
  • Books shape perception: Age-appropriate stories help normalize skilled trades, build respect for hands-on work, and expand what careers feel “possible.”

The Reality: AI Can't Do That

The Books: Turning Curiosity Into Inspiration

The Mission: Reach Kids Earlier

  • The security offered by careers in the trades are significant selling points, particularly in the face of increasing automation and technological advancements.
  • Unlike many white-collar professions susceptible to automation, skilled trades are less likely to be replaced by technology, providing a reliable and sustainable career path for future generations. Technology will advance in the trades, but not replace the skilled trade.

Each trade in the Paula Bunyan Children’s Book Series will be explored through three distinct books — designed to engage young readers from different angles and learning styles.

Vocabulary Adventures

  • Rhyming A-to-Z books introduce children to the unique language of each trade.
  • Kids can pronounce “t-rex" and "tyrannosaurus rex,” so why not “amp” and “ampere”?
  • Early exposure to trade-related words builds familiarity, curiosity, and confidence.

Everyday Heroes

  • Role-model stories celebrate the real-world impact of skilled professionals.
  • Children grow up reading about firefighters — so why not electricians, welders, or plumbers as heroes of their own trades?

Trade Match Rhymes

  • Playful, rhyming stories connect children’s natural interests with potential future careers.
  • These books help kids imagine themselves in the trades that fit them best.
